Mildew under your office mat ?
On a number of occasions we have come across stained carpet caused by
mildew growing under an office mat. These stains are hard or impossible to
remove and range in color from  dark brown to a light tan. The problem is
that cement is porous and will let moisture pass through unless it has been
sealed. Normally the rising moisture simply evaporates, but once trapped for
months under an "airtight" office mat, mildew may form.

Check your office mat occasionally. If you ever feel dampness or the carpet
has a cooler, softer touch than the carpet outside the mat, we strongly
recommend you get into the habit of taking the mat off a day or two once a
month. I've seen Mildew form and severely stain in less than four month.

Tips on vacuuming
Frequent vacuuming is the best maintenance you can do for your carpet. An
upright vacuum cleaner with rotating brushes works the best. Pay particular
attention to thresholds and the first 4 feet of any entrance - here you will
find up to 65 % of the dirt in that room. Use your crevice tool attachment to
vacuum along the baseboards. Not only will you pick up a lot of dust, but this
is also one of the best indoor pest controls you can do without spraying
chemicals.

Vacuuming certain orientals rugs can be difficult as their dense texture really
traps dirt well. A great trick is to turn them over and vacuum the backside
using an upright vacuum. The rotating brushes will vibrate  the backing, thus
letting gravity release, what sometimes amounts to piles of dust and silt.

Door mats & runners
Door mats and runners can be a great way to protect your carpet. A high
quality doormat, that is shaken or changed regularly will be your best defense
up front. Consider a 'double': one coarse mat outside the most used
entrance followed by a carpet sample on the other side of the threshold.

Runners are great for hallways where traffic is confined. Today they are
affordable and quite durable. You may also consider runners in front of
couches or a carpet sample beneath "the favorite recliner."

Sun rays that bleach
An age old bleaching agent is sun rays. Slowly but surely they will fade colors
in your upholstery and carpets. The stronger the color, the more fading you
can expect. Bright colored Oriental rugs are prime candidates. Over time the
UV rays can also degrade the texture of your carpet, be sure to use blinds
when direct sunlight from a high angle enters your home. Check that no
leather furniture gets direct exposure as well - dyed leather will not only fade,
but age much faster when exposed.

Special spotting
Ball Point Ink: Use hair spray and be sure to rinse the entire area well with
water when finished. Blot thoroughly to get all water and residues out.

Blood Stains: Flush with cold salt water (1 tablespoon pr. qt). Avoid hot
water as heat will set the blood stain. Then blot.

Candle Wax: Put a brown paper bag over the dried wax and run a hot iron
over it. The bag will absorb the hot wax.

Grass Stains: Apply rubbing alcohol liberally to stained areas. Rinse well and
blot.

Gum: Freeze the gum with ice and use a dull knife to remove.

Urin Stain:  Blot as much as possible, apply baking soda and let sit until
next day where you vacuum up. This will deodorize as well as soak up
residues.
